Cosmetic Dentistry Q&A
What treatment options are there for cosmetic dentistry?
Cosmetic dentistry at Advanced Dental & Implant Care: Christopher Pottorff, DMD may include:
- Dental crowns
- Dental implants
- Porcelain veneers
- Dental bonding
What are dental crowns?
Dental crowns are caps or covers that have many benefits. First, they will protect a tooth that has had a root canal. Second, crowns will protect a tooth that is more prone to breaking because of a previous injury. Lastly, Dr. Pottorff can use them on a single tooth that is discolored or an unattractive filing. In these cases, a dental crown protects the tooth and makes it blend in with the surrounding teeth.

What are dental implants?
Dental implants are teeth created with man-made materials and permanently implanted in the jaw. Today, implants have become a standard of care for many reasons. First, they offer patients a foundation for new teeth where natural teeth are missing or in place of teeth extractions. Second, the tooth has the opportunity to regain normal function without a bridge or dentures. Bridges and dentures can cause deterioration of teeth and bone.
Most importantly, they look entirely natural and brighten your smile. You will care for your implants just as you do for your natural teeth. On the contrary, dentures have to be removed daily for proper care.

What are porcelain veneers?
Porcelain veneers are small pieces of laminate designed to replace your original tooth enamel. Dr. Pottorff will place the veneers onto your teeth to give it a new protective layer. Additionally, this will provide cosmetic whiteness and a restored brightness to your smile. Furthermore, veneers will restore the natural function of chipped or decayed teeth. Dr. Pottorff fits the porcelain veneers naturally onto your teeth. Ultimately, this will create a new and stronger bond that protects your teeth and enamel from plaque and bacteria buildup.

What is dental bonding?
Dental bonding is a cosmetic dentistry treatment made of durable plastic resin. Bonding is a relatively new and technologically advanced procedure. However, the treatment will be painless and rarely requires anesthesia or advanced preparation. Typically, the process will be quick, taking 30-60 minutes per tooth. First, Dr. Pottorff will ensure the resin is the same color as your tooth so it will blend naturally with your existing teeth. Next, the adhesive will be placed and hardened – or bonded – to the tooth. This step will require the use of a special light. Next, Dr. Pottorff and his team will coat the tooth with a conditioning liquid. Then, a putty material will be applied and molded to the tooth before hardening. Once complete, you will have a restored smile that looks natural.
